Royal Dutch Shell acquires Marcellus operator

In another example of global energy companies focusing on natural gas, Royal Dutch Shell has agreed to buy East Resources for $4.7 billion in cash.

As Forbes resports, East Resources is a private company with significant holdings in the Marcellus Shale region.

The deal could boost Royal Dutch Shell's natural gas production in North America by 7.5 percent.
